Pi-hole is a DNS blocker that protects your devices from unwanted ads, analytics, malware, and other content. When your devices try resolving a new domain name (e.g., analytics.google.com), Pi-hole blocks the undesirable domain while allowing others to be resolved successfully.

Pi-hole was made to run on low-end hardware. There are many options out there, but I'll help you find the best one for your needs. First off, let's go over the system requirements for running Pi-hole.

Should You Use Ethernet or Wi-Fi With Pi-hole?

Pi-hole will work when your Raspberry Pi is connected to either Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Ethernet may provide a slightly faster response time and a more stable connection than Wi-Fi. However, you most likely won't notice much of a difference between the two.

MicroSD Card Capacity

While a 4 GB microSD card works fine, a 32 GB microSD card is recommended since there's not much price difference. A larger microSD card would allow you to repurpose the Raspberry Pi in the future or use it for multiple tasks.

I recommend the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32 GB SDHC Memory Card on Amazon if you don't already have one and aren't getting one in a kit.

Raspberry Pi 4 (Model B) Extreme Kit

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is great if you want something faster with more flexibility than the Raspberry Pi Zero W. • Raspberry Pi 4 Model B specs:
    • 1.5 GHz quad-core 64-bit processor
    • 4 GB RAM
    • Supports dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz) Wi-Fi

Raspberry Pi Zero W (Wireless) Starter Kit

The Raspberry Pi Zero W is the lowest-cost and smallest kit option. It has a slower processor along with less RAM than the other two. This Raspberry Pi will still work for Pi-hole, though. It just may not have as much flexibility included when compared with the others.

  • Raspberry Pi Zero W specs:
    • 1 GHz single-core processor
    • 512MB RAM
    • Supports dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz) Wi-Fi
    • Bluetooth 4.1
    • No Ethernet port
    • One micro-HDMI port (720p resolution or below recommended)
    • One micro USB port
    • 40-pin GPIO port
  • The Raspberry Pi Zero W Starter Kit comes with a black case (3 interchangeable covers), USB OTG adapter, mini HDMI adapter, heat sink, camera module adapter, and power supply. SD card required!
