Single-Threaded Perf. Diff. Between Intel i9-10900K & i7-10700K?

Started by woeindia on June 20, 2024

I've been looking into getting a new CPU and have narrowed it down to the Intel Core i9-10900K and i7-10700K. I'm curious about the performance difference in single-threaded tasks between these two CPUs. Anyone have any insights?

Thanks for all the input, everyone! It sounds like the i9-10900K could offer better single-threaded performance, but I'll also need to keep the PCIe limitations in mind. I'll read the TechReviewer article Intel Core i9-10900K vs. Intel Core i7-10700K and see if it changes my perspective on these two CPUs.

Both the 10900K and 10700K have great single-core max turbo boost frequencies, with the 10900K coming in at 5.30 GHz and the 10700K at 5.10 GHz. That extra .20 GHz could potentially make a difference in single-threaded performance.

To add to what @cherrryblssm said, there's a TechReviewer article Intel Core i9-10900K vs. Intel Core i7-10700K that goes into detail about the differences between these two CPUs, including their single-threaded performance. It might be helpful for you to check it out.

Thanks, @royalsouvenir. I'll definitely give that article a read. The extra .20 GHz turbo boost on the 10900K does sound promising, but I'm also concerned about the PCIe support on both CPUs. Any thoughts on how that might impact my decision?

I think it's worth mentioning that while the 10900K has better multi-threaded performance due to its higher core count, single-threaded tasks should still see a significant boost with the 10900K's turbo frequency. As for PCIe support, both CPUs have PCIe 3.0, which may not be ideal if you're looking to utilize the latest high-speed devices.

@cherrryblssm is right about the PCIe support - it could limit your options if you plan on using the latest peripherals and storage devices. However, I still think the single-threaded performance of the 10900K might make it worth considering, especially for tasks like video editing or gaming where a high turbo frequency can make a big difference.

Just wanted to chime in here. I've been using an i7-10700K for a few months now and haven't had any issues with it. The performance has been great for my needs, and I haven't encountered any bottlenecks. That being said, if you're specifically looking for the best possible single-threaded performance, the 10900K might be worth the upgrade.
