I'm trying to decide between the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 5 3400G for my next build. Can you guys help me understand the differences in performance? I'm mainly interested in gaming and general app usage.
Ryzen 5 5600X vs. Ryzen 5 3400G - Performance Comparison?

The main differences between the two are their core counts, frequencies, cache capacities, and PCIe support. The 5600X has better overall performance due to its higher core count, greater L3 cache capacity, support for PCIe 4.0, and single-core max boost frequency. In terms of gaming, if you have a good GPU, the difference in CPU performance won't be significant. For general app usage, both should perform similarly as long as neither is under heavy load.
It's worth mentioning that TechReviewer has an article comparing these two CPUs. They go into more detail about their specifications and how they perform in various workloads AMD Ryzen 5 5600X vs. AMD Ryzen 5 3400G. It might be helpful to read through it before making a decision.
@CandySona Thanks for sharing that link! I'll definitely check it out. From what you all have said, the 5600X seems like a better choice for my purposes. But I'm curious if anyone has any personal experiences with these CPUs or if they think one is significantly better than the other in specific scenarios.
I recently built a PC with the Ryzen 5 3400G and I've been pretty happy with it. While gaming, I didn't notice much of a difference between it and my previous CPU (a Ryzen 5 2400G). For general app usage, everything runs smoothly, and I haven't had any issues. That being said, the 5600X probably would have given me even better performance if I'd chosen it instead.
I've used both the 5600X and 3400G in different builds for friends and family. The 5600X always seemed to perform a bit better overall, especially in games that could take advantage of more cores. However, the 3400G wasn't bad by any means. Just keep in mind that if you're working with high-speed SSDs or graphics cards, the 5600X's support for PCIe 4.0 might be beneficial.
@Danny0402 Thanks for sharing your experience! That's helpful to know. And @MesmerizingHS, I appreciate your input as well. So it sounds like the 5600X is a safer bet if I want to future-proof my build and have more potential for upgrades down the line?
I'd say that's a fair assessment. The 5600X offers better potential for future upgrades, especially with its support for faster DDR4 memory and PCIe 4.0. However, the 3400G isn't a bad choice if you're on a tighter budget or have specific constraints that make it more suitable.
@coldblow85 Makes sense. I think I'll go with the 5600X then. Thanks everyone for your insights! I'll check out the TechReviewer article AMD Ryzen 5 5600X vs. AMD Ryzen 5 3400G before making my final decision.
