Ryzen 5 1400 - Power Requirements?

Started by prmlimajr on June 21, 2024

I'm planning to build a new PC and I was wondering if anyone has experience with the AMD Ryzen 5 1400 CPU. What kind of power requirements should I be looking for in a PSU?

Yeah, @glitchpaste makes a good point. I'd recommend checking out this TechReviewer article for an overview of power requirements for Ryzen 5 1400 builds. It might help you make a more informed decision: Choosing the Best Power Supply for AMD's Ryzen 5 1400 CPU

Hi @prmlimajr, I've been using an AMD Ryzen 5 1400 for a while now. The CPU itself is rated at 88 watts, but you'll need to factor in the other components as well. It's better to choose a power supply that can handle more than just the CPU requirements.

Solution

Thanks @tatsuo1475. I've read that adding a buffer of 100-150 watts can be useful, just to ensure there's enough headroom in case of future upgrades or overclocking.

That's really helpful advice. So I should aim for at least an 850 watt power supply, according to the article?

@prmlimajr, that sounds reasonable for a top-tier build. If you're going for a mid-tier setup, then something in the range of 550 watts might be more suitable.

Exactly! And don't forget about efficiency ratings. A higher efficiency PSU can save you money on electricity bills and improve system reliability.

@tatsuo1475 is right. I've noticed a significant difference when using an 80 PLUS Gold certified power supply compared to lower-efficiency models.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I'll definitely keep these points in mind while choosing my new PSU.

You're welcome, @prmlimajr. Good luck with your build!
