Optimal Chipset for Intel Core i9-12900?

Started by bronzeforearms on July 09, 2024

I'm considering getting a new computer and was wondering what the best chipset to use with an Intel Core i9-12900 CPU would be. Any advice?

Another thing to consider is that the Core i9-12900 doesn't support overclocking, so you may not need a top-of-the-line motherboard after all. You can check out this TechReviewer article Which Chipsets Work With Intel's Core i9-12900 CPU? for more information on that.

I've been using a Core i9-12900 for a while now and it's great! For most tasks, even the mid-range chipsets like H770 or B760 work fine. But if you want to push your system to its limits, you might need a higher-end chipset.

That link is super useful! Thanks for sharing, @FluorescentAndStarry. So according to the article, I'll need a motherboard with an LGA 1700 socket and a compatible 700-series or 600-series chipset. But as you said, @futureofwar, even mid-range chipsets should be fine for most tasks.

I recently built a PC with an i9-12900 CPU and used the H670 chipset. It's been working great so far! The performance has been excellent, and I haven't encountered any issues yet.

That's good to hear, @RayJoyc3. Do you think the H670 is better than other chipsets like the B660 or H610? And do you think it's worth paying extra for a Z690-based motherboard?

Well, @bronzeforearms, the choice really depends on your specific needs and budget. The H670 should be fine for most people, but if you're looking to overclock your CPU or use advanced features, then a Z690-based motherboard might be worth it.

Solution

Thanks for the clarification, @FluorescentAndStarry. I didn't realize the 12900 was non-overclockable. That saves me some money! Now I just need to decide between H670 and B660. Any opinions on those?

If I were you, @bronzeforearms, I'd go with the H670 chipset. It offers better performance and features compared to the B660, in my experience. Plus, it's still reasonably priced.

I agree with @futureofwar. The H670 provides more value for your money, especially if you want to future-proof your build a bit. But ultimately, it comes down to your budget and what you're comfortable spending.

Thanks for the advice, guys! I think I'll go with the H670 chipset and save some cash. Appreciate all the help!
