Intel Core i9-14900KF vs. Intel Core i9-12900F - Differences?

Started by christopherlaugh on May 16, 2024

I'm trying to decide between the Intel Core i9-14900KF and Intel Core i9-12900F for my new build. Can anyone share their thoughts on the differences? Any help would be appreciated!

Hi @christopherlaugh! Sure thing. So you're basically looking at two CPUs with different core counts, base frequencies, turbo frequencies, cache sizes, and some other factors. I've done a quick comparison for you in this TechReviewer article Intel Core i9-14900KF vs. Intel Core i9-12900F. It might help you make your decision.

Solution

Thanks for the comparison, @Dizmatiz! From what I see, the Core i9-14900KF has more cores (24) compared to the Core i9-12900F's 16. Is that right? And how does this affect performance?

Yes, that's correct about the core count. Now I'm just curious if having more cores is better for gaming or general usage.

Well, @bikerjesusguy, it really depends on what you're using your computer for. For gaming, having more cores can be beneficial, but only up to a certain point. Most games don't take full advantage of more than 6-8 cores. So the Core i9-12900F should still perform well in most games.

@christopherlaugh, I remember when I was trying to choose between these two CPUs for my build. Ultimately, it comes down to your specific needs and budget. If you don't need the extra cores of the 14900KF and are okay with a slightly lower turbo frequency, the 12900F might be a better option.

That's right, @GofuTofu! The Core i9-12900F also lacks overclocking support, which could be important for some users. But if you don't plan on pushing your CPU to its limits, it shouldn't be a big deal.

Good point. I didn't realize the 12900F doesn't support overclocking. I guess that's something I should consider. Any other differences worth mentioning?

The DDR5 support is also different between these two CPUs. The Core i9-14900KF supports a max stock speed of 5600 MHz, while the Core i9-12900F is limited to 4800 MHz. This could be relevant if you're planning on using high-speed memory.

Oh yeah! And let's not forget about PCIe support. Both CPUs have PCIe 5.0, but that's still something to consider when building a high-performance system.

Thanks for all the input everyone! It sounds like both CPUs are capable and well-suited for gaming and general usage. I think I'll do some more research on my own, but these insights were definitely helpful!

No problem, @christopherlaugh! Happy building, and feel free to ask any more questions if you have them.
