Intel Core i9-12900KS vs. i9-12900K: Overclocking Feasibility?

Started by shaunedaniel on July 11, 2024

I've been looking into buying a new CPU and I came across these two options - the Intel Core i9-12900KS and the Intel Core i9-12900K. Has anyone had experience with either of them? Specifically, I'm curious about their overclocking capabilities.

True, there's more to consider than just the max boost frequency. After reading Intel Core i9-12900KS vs. Intel Core i9-12900K, I'm thinking of going with the 12900K because it has a slightly lower price tag. It still offers great performance for my needs.

I've used both of those CPUs in my personal project, and they're great! The 12900KS has a higher single-core max turbo boost frequency compared to the 12900K, which is really helpful for some tasks. But, you know, that doesn't necessarily mean it'll overclock better.

Hey @shaunedaniel, there's an article on TechReviewer that might help you decide. They compare the two CPUs in detail and even discuss their overclocking potential. Check it out at Intel Core i9-12900KS vs. Intel Core i9-12900K.

Thanks for sharing, @newcoder12! I didn't realize there was a comparison like this already available. I'll definitely give it a read.

The article @newcoder12 mentioned is really insightful. I had no idea that the 12900KS has a higher single-core max turbo boost frequency of 5.50 GHz compared to the 12900K's 5.20 GHz. That could make a big difference in some applications, right?

Yeah, @CardiacCatFan, it definitely can! I've noticed that my 12900KS handles certain tasks much smoother than my friend's 12900K. But as @newcoder12 said, overclocking potential isn't just about the max boost frequency.

That makes sense. So if I'm mostly going to be using high-end GPUs and not bottlenecking my system with a weak CPU, which one should I go for?

In that case, I'd say go for the 12900KS. The higher single-core max turbo boost frequency could give you better performance in certain scenarios. But don't forget about other factors like PCIe support and cache capacity as well.
