Intel Core i7-14700 vs. i9-12900KF - Key Differences?

Started by aisu-kurimu on May 09, 2024

I'm currently looking for a new CPU and I'm trying to decide between the Intel Core i7-14700 and i9-12900KF. Can anyone give me some input on these two? I'm mainly a gamer, but I also do some video editing.

No problem @aisu-kurimu. I'd recommend reading this TechReviewer article Intel Core i7-14700 vs. Intel Core i9-12900KF if you want a more in-depth comparison of these two CPUs. It covers all the key differences, including overclocking support and performance.

Hey @aisu-kurimu, both of those CPUs are great choices! The main difference is that the i7-14700 has 20 cores and 28 threads while the i9-12900KF has 16 cores and 24 threads. That means if you're doing lots of multitasking or running memory-intensive applications, the i7 might be better.

Yeah, but if you're mostly gaming, I'd recommend the i9-12900KF. It has a slightly higher base frequency, which can help it run games smoother and more efficiently.

@LaylaSleep and @jimbojim1997 are right! The i7-14700 has a larger L3 cache, but the i9-12900KF overclocking capabilities could give you better performance. However, I think the most important thing is to consider your budget and your specific needs.

That's really helpful, thanks @DrNoesis. But can anyone tell me more about DDR support? Does it matter for gaming or video editing?

Sure, @aisu-kurimu, the i7-14700 supports DDR5 with a max stock speed of 5600 MHz while the i9-12900KF supports DDR5 with a max stock speed of 4800 MHz. So if you need more memory bandwidth for video editing or other tasks, the i7 might be a better choice.

Interesting! What about PCIe support? Is there any difference in performance between these two CPUs?

Both the i7-14700 and i9-12900KF support PCIe 5.0, so there shouldn't be much of a difference in terms of data transfer speeds.

Right, but if you plan on using multiple GPUs or NVMe SSDs, having more cores can help with multitasking and keeping everything running smoothly.

Good point @jimbojim1997. Also, it's worth mentioning that the i7-14700 has a higher single-core turbo frequency, which might be beneficial for some games and video editing tasks.

That makes sense. I guess I need to think more about my specific use case and budget. Thanks everyone!
