Intel Core i7-14700 vs. Core i7-11700K Overclocking?

Started by yasoyeso on July 07, 2024

I'm in a bit of a dilemma, guys. I recently got my hands on the new Intel Core i7-14700 and was curious to know if overclocking is possible with this CPU. I've heard mixed things. Can anyone provide some insight?

Hey @yasoyeso, I haven't personally used either CPU, but based on the TechReviewer article Intel Core i7-14700 vs. Intel Core i7-11700K and other user experiences like @gluczkowski2's, it seems that both have their advantages. Ultimately, it depends on your specific needs. If you need the ability to overclock for certain tasks, the 11700K might be a better fit. But if you prioritize other features like DDR5 support and PCIe 5.0, the 14700 could be more suitable.

Hey @yasoyeso, the 14700 doesn't support overclocking, unfortunately. The 11700K does, though! It's a bit older but still packs a punch. You might want to consider that if you're interested in being able to tweak your CPU's performance.

Thanks for the input, @lexalbrecht. I've been looking into both of these CPUs and came across this TechReviewer article Intel Core i7-14700 vs. Intel Core i7-11700K that gives a pretty comprehensive comparison. It seems like the 14700 has better core types and core counts, higher frequencies, larger cache capacities, and DDR5 support with a max stock speed of 5600 MHz. The 11700K does have an edge in terms of overclocking capabilities though.

Wow, thanks for sharing that @buzzorotto. I wasn't aware of the differences between these two CPUs. So it seems like the 14700 has more potential for better performance overall, but the 11700K would give me the ability to overclock. I'm leaning towards the 14700 since I prefer stability and higher stock speeds, but I'd love to hear any personal experiences from those who have used either of these CPUs.

I've been using a 11700K for about six months now, and I must say that its overclocking capabilities have been a game-changer for me. I do some pretty heavy rendering work, so being able to push the CPU to its limits has saved me a lot of time. However, the stock performance is still great even without overclocking.

That's really helpful, @gluczkowski2. It sounds like the 11700K might be worth it for me if I'm planning on doing some heavy work in the future. But what about the 14700? Has anyone tried it out?
