Intel Core i5-10600KF & 500W PSU - Enough Power?

Started by SimpleDose on July 10, 2024

I'm planning to build a PC with an Intel Core i5-10600KF CPU and was wondering if a 500W power supply would be enough for my setup. What do you think? Any advice?

You guys mentioned some great points. I read the TechReviewer article Choosing the Best Power Supply for Intel's Core i5-10600KF CPU and found it really helpful in understanding the wattage requirements for my Intel Core i5-10600KF CPU and other components. Thanks!

It's worth noting that the article Choosing the Best Power Supply for Intel's Core i5-10600KF CPU discusses this issue in more detail, but generally speaking, I'd recommend a higher wattage PSU for your build.

Yeah, I agree with @Chreativ. A 500W power supply might not be enough for your CPU and other components. I had similar concerns when building my own PC, so I went with a 750W PSU instead.

I had the same situation as you, @SimpleDose, and ended up choosing a 650W power supply. It has worked great so far, but I'm not sure if it would have been enough if I had gone for a more demanding setup.

Solution

That's good to know, @surprisinglylittle. I'm still a bit unsure though - is there any way to calculate exactly how much power I'll need? Or should I just go with a higher wattage PSU as a safe bet?

It's not too hard to estimate the power consumption of your components. You can refer to the specifications of each part and add them up, along with a little buffer for future upgrades or overclocking.

@Chreativ is right. It's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to choosing the PSU wattage. I underestimated my power needs and ended up having to upgrade my PSU after a few months of using my PC. It was quite an inconvenience, so I'd recommend estimating your needs accurately.

@tokyobob makes a good point about the potential inconvenience of upgrading the PSU later on. I'm glad I went with a slightly higher wattage in the first place.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll definitely take it into account when choosing my power supply. By the way, have you guys used any particular brands that you'd recommend?
