Intel Core i5-10400 vs i5-9400F - Differences?

Started by Nick2k0507 on May 31, 2024

I've been looking at getting a new CPU for my desktop and I'm trying to decide between the Intel Core i5-10400 and the i5-9400F. Has anyone had any experience with these or can recommend one over the other? Any advice would be appreciated!

So I recently got an i5-10400 for my computer build, and it's been working great so far. The higher single-core turbo frequency definitely makes a difference in my gaming experience.

I've used both the i5-9400F and i5-10400 in different builds, and I can tell you that they have their own advantages. Both are powerful CPUs, but if you're looking for better single-core performance, the i5-10400 is the way to go. For example, I noticed a huge difference when playing games like Fortnite and Apex Legends.

That's interesting! I didn't realize there was such a difference in performance between them. How about multitasking? Does one handle it better than the other?

I've used an i5-9400F for some time now, and while it does well with most tasks, I did experience some issues when running multiple resource-intensive applications simultaneously.

Right, that's because the i5-9400F has fewer threads compared to the i5-10400. So, if you often find yourself multitasking or using resource-heavy software, the i5-10400 might be a better choice due to its higher thread count.

Makes sense! I'll definitely keep that in mind. What about overclocking capabilities? Is there any difference between these two?

Both CPUs lack support for overclocking, so neither one has an advantage over the other in that department. It's worth noting that the i5-9400F can be a bit more affordable than the i5-10400, which could be a factor to consider.

That's helpful to know. And what about memory support? Are there any differences between them?

Both CPUs support DDR4 with a max stock speed of 2666 MHz, but if you're looking for more future-proofing and possibly higher performance, the i5-10400 has better potential for faster memory speeds.

Good point. I'll have to think about that as well. Thanks for all the input, everyone!
