I'm building a new computer and need some advice on the power supply. I have an Intel Core i5-10400 CPU and was wondering if a 500W power supply would be sufficient for it? Any suggestions or experiences with this CPU?
Intel Core i5-10400, 500W Power Supply Sufficient?

Hi @Negeerbeer, according to TechReviewer, a 500W power supply may not be enough for the Intel Core i5-10400 CPU. The peak power consumption of the CPU is 134 watts at its maximum turbo boost frequency. For optimal performance and to avoid potential damage to components or data corruption, it's recommended to use a power supply with a higher wattage capacity.
I've been using an i5-10400 with a 600W power supply and haven't had any issues. But if you're planning on adding more components later, it might be wise to go for a higher wattage PSU. It's always better to have a little extra headroom.
Yeah, @lunapopdrop is right. I made the mistake of going with a 500W power supply and had to upgrade my CPU because the power supply couldn't handle it. It was a frustrating experience. A higher wattage PSU is definitely recommended for the i5-10400.
@lunapopdrop Thanks for the info. So, what would you recommend as an ideal range of watts for this CPU? And are there any specific models you'd suggest?
Based on TechReviewer's article Choosing the Best Power Supply for Intel's Core i5-10400 CPU, for top-tier components, a power supply in the 750-1650W range is recommended. If you have mid-tier components, a 600-1000W range should suffice. For value-tier components, a 400-600W range is ideal.
That's helpful, @AstroColton. What about efficiency? Should I consider that when choosing a power supply?
Efficiency is important too, especially for long-term savings on electricity bills and reducing heat generation. Look for power supplies with an 80 PLUS rating or higher, like 80 PLUS Gold, Platinum, or Titanium.
I agree with @lunapopdrop. Higher efficiency PSUs are more reliable and produce less noise. It's worth the extra cost upfront to save in the long run and have a better overall experience.
True words, guys. Don't forget to check for modular cables if you plan on having a clean build. They make cable management much easier.
@AstroColton Thanks for all the advice! I'll definitely consider these factors when choosing my power supply. Appreciate your suggestions and experiences!
