I'm looking to get a new CPU for video editing. Anyone have any thoughts on the Intel Core i3-14100 versus the i9-13900K? I've heard some mixed things.

I've read a great TechReviewer article comparing the i3-14100 and i9-13900K. Intel Core i3-14100 vs. Intel Core i9-13900K It goes into detail about their performance in video editing workloads.

I've been using an i3-1210 for video editing and it's served me well, but that was a few years back. What are the specs of these new ones you're looking at?

Yeah, so the Core i3-14100 has 4 cores with 8 threads, a base frequency of 3.50 GHz, and a max turbo frequency of 4.70 GHz. The i9-13900K, on the other hand, has 24 cores with 32 threads, a base frequency of 3.00 GHz, and a max turbo frequency of 5.80 GHz.

I'd go for the i9-13900K if I were you. The extra cores will give you more power for video editing tasks.

What about single-core performance? I'm mostly working with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, so I'm wondering which one would be better for those.

Solution

Thanks for sharing that link, @Livinglifelite! So according to the article, the i9-13900K has a higher core count, better overall performance, and improved L3 cache capacity, which should make it more suitable for video editing.

That makes sense. But isn't the i3-14100 still good for certain use cases, like running fewer applications simultaneously or using tools that don't require extensive multi-core processing?

Yes, you're right. The TechReviewer article also mentions that the i3-14100 can still offer good performance in those specific situations.

So it sounds like if I'm doing more heavy lifting with multiple video streams and complex effects, the i9-13900K is the way to go. But for lighter workloads, the i3-14100 should be fine?

Exactly! It all depends on your specific needs and the complexity of your projects.

In my experience, having a powerful GPU also helps a lot with video editing tasks. Don't forget to consider that as well when making your decision.
