GTX 1080 With 550W PSU - Safe?

Started by keenmchn on July 11, 2024

I'm thinking of building a new PC and was wondering if using a GTX 1080 GPU with a 550W PSU is safe. Any advice?

Hi @keenmchn, using an GTX 1080 with a 550W PSU could work, but it's not recommended for optimal performance and stability. The peak power consumption of the GTX 1080 is 180W, so having a PSU that can support at least 650W to account for other components and a buffer is suggested. Solution

Thanks for sharing, @graemej1. I was just looking into the best power supply units (PSUs) for my GTX 1080. Based on your link, it seems like the Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 Series 80+ Gold Full Modular ATX 3.0 PCIe Gen 5 Power Supply is a good choice. It's in the 750-1650W range and has great reviews.

Oh, that sounds interesting! I'll definitely check it out. By the way, does anyone have experience with EVGA SuperNOVA G5 Series Fully Modular Power Supply (220-G5-0650-X1)? I've heard good things about it as well.

I haven't personally used the EVGA SuperNOVA G5 Series, but from what I've read, it seems to be a reliable option. It's in the 650-1000W range, so it should provide enough power for your GTX 1080 and other components. Just make sure you have some buffer for any additional components or overclocking.

I recently built my PC with a GTX 1080 GPU and used a 550W PSU, and everything has been running smoothly so far. Don't worry too much about the power consumption; as long as your setup is well-balanced and you don't have any other high-power components, it should be fine.

Thanks for sharing your experience, @MrsDempsey. That gives me some peace of mind. I guess I'll need to do more research on the best PSUs in the 650-1000W range.

No problem, @keenmchn. Just keep an eye out for reviews and efficiency ratings when choosing a PSU. Good luck with your build!

Don't forget to check the latest prices on Amazon for the power supplies mentioned earlier. Happy building!
