CPU for Better Multitasking: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs Intel Core i9-12900?

Started by macaronis on June 20, 2024

I've been doing some research on CPUs for my new build, and I'm trying to decide between the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D and the Intel Core i9-12900. Has anyone had any experience with these? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

It's hard to say without knowing more about your specific use case. However, based on the TechReviewer article AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs. Intel Core i9-12900, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D has a lower core count which might not be as efficient for multitasking or running multiple applications simultaneously.

Hey @macaronis, both the Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Core i9-12900 are great choices! Have you checked out this article on TechReviewer that compares them in detail? AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs. Intel Core i9-12900

Wow, thanks for sharing that @talileota! I'll definitely take a look. Just to give some context, my build is mostly for gaming and multitasking. What would you recommend?

I've used both of these CPUs in my system, and I must say they're both excellent. For multitasking, I think the Core i9-12900 might have an edge with its 24 threads compared to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D's 16. However, I'm not sure if that difference will be noticeable in gaming.

Yeah, @ChaveyJones brings up a good point. Multitasking is where the i9-12900 really shines with its extra cores and higher thread count. But for gaming, I think it comes down to personal preference and what other components you have. I've heard great things about both CPUs from friends who game on them.

Thanks for your input, guys! So, if I'm mostly using my computer for gaming and some multitasking, would the Core i9-12900 be a better choice?

Solution

Right, and remember that having too many cores can sometimes lead to diminishing returns in gaming performance. Most modern games don't benefit from having more than 6-8 cores. So the Ryzen 7 5800X3D might still hold its own in gaming.

Okay, I'll definitely keep all this information in mind. Thanks for the advice, everyone! I think I need to do some more digging and maybe even build a few test systems to see what works best for me.
