Core i9-12900KS TDP Impact?

Started by Kunstvis on June 22, 2024

I've been researching the new Core i9-12900KS processor and its TDP seems quite high. Has anyone experienced any issues with overheating or performance due to this high TDP? How does it impact building a PC around this CPU?

Speaking of coolers, TechReviewer has an article on What Is the TDP of the Core i9-12900KS CPU? discussing the best CPU coolers for high-TDP CPUs like the 12900KS. It's worth checking out if you're unsure about which cooler to choose.

The TDP of the 12900KS is indeed higher than some other CPUs, but it's not uncommon for high-end processors like this one to have a higher TDP. As long as you choose a good cooler and build your system with adequate airflow, you shouldn't have any issues.

I've been using the Core i9-12900KS for a while now, and I haven't experienced any overheating or performance issues. The key is to select a quality CPU cooler that can handle the TDP. I used the Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 for my system, and it works great.

Solution

@waynepreno, Thanks for sharing that link! I'll definitely have a look at it. It would be helpful to know what other components I should consider when building a system around this CPU in terms of TDP and performance.

Apart from the cooler, you'll also need to choose an appropriate power supply unit (PSU) with enough wattage to support the 12900KS and its high TDP. Additionally, having a well-designed case with good airflow is crucial for maintaining low temperatures and ensuring stable operation.

I agree with @wakeupsir. A good PSU is essential when building a system with a high-TDP CPU like the 12900KS. I've been using the Corsair RM750x, which has been working great so far. As for cases, I recommend checking out the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv X or NZXT H510.

@graemej1, @wakeupsir Thanks for your input! These recommendations are really helpful. Just one more question: does the TDP of the 12900KS affect its performance significantly when overclocking?

Overclocking can push a CPU's temperature higher, especially if you're trying to achieve a significant boost in clock speeds. The high TDP of the 12900KS means it will generate more heat during overclocking, so having an even better cooling solution is crucial. However, as long as your cooler can handle the increased thermal output, the TDP itself won't limit performance gains from overclocking.

That makes sense. I'll definitely keep that in mind when building my system around the 12900KS. Thanks everyone for your insights!
