Core i7-11700K vs. AMD Ryzen 7 3800X for Multitasking?

Started by legendarycrumpet on May 25, 2024

I'm trying to decide between the Intel Core i7-11700K and the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X for multitasking purposes. Can anyone provide some insight on which one would be better suited for this? I've heard that both are great processors, but I'd like to hear more opinions.

It really depends on your specific use case and budget, but I recently read a TechReviewer article comparing the two CPUs What Is the TDP of the Core i7-11700K CPU?. It might help you make a decision. The AMD Ryzen 7 3800X is known for its excellent multitasking capabilities due to its large number of threads (16) and high base clock speed (3.8 GHz). On the other hand, the Intel Core i7-11700K has a lower thread count (16) but boasts a higher turbo frequency (5.0 GHz), which can be advantageous for single-threaded tasks.

Thank you, @Matt3124. I did read that article and it was helpful, but I'm still unsure about the best choice for multitasking. Could you elaborate on what you meant by the "large number of threads" for the Ryzen 7 3800X?

I think @Matt3124 is referring to the fact that the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X has a total of 16 cores and 16 threads, while the Intel Core i7-11700K also has 8 cores and 16 threads (thanks to Hyper-Threading Technology). This means that the Ryzen 7 3800X can handle more simultaneous tasks, which is essential for multitasking.

Ah, I see. So, if I understand correctly, the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X has an advantage in handling multiple tasks at once due to its higher number of threads?

Yes, @Travelblind explained it well. The Ryzen 7 3800X's higher thread count makes it more suitable for multitasking compared to the Intel Core i7-11700K. However, if you're mostly working on single-threaded tasks or have a tighter budget, the Core i7-11700K might be a better choice.

What about temperatures and power consumption? I'm concerned about the potential heat generated by these processors while multitasking.

The Intel Core i7-11700K has a TDP of 125 watts at its base frequency and can boost up to 251 watts when turbo boosting. The AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, on the other hand, has a base TDP of 105 watts and boosts up to 190 watts. In terms of power consumption and heat generation, the Ryzen 7 3800X should be more efficient than the Core i7-11700K, but both CPUs can be adequately cooled by a high-quality cooler.

That's good to know, @spencerfitch. I'll definitely need to invest in a good CPU cooler. In terms of multitasking performance, would there be any noticeable differences between these two processors?

The difference between the Intel Core i7-11700K and AMD Ryzen 7 3800X for multitasking might not be as significant as you think. Both processors are capable of handling most multitasking tasks with ease. However, if your work primarily involves heavy multitasking, the Ryzen 7 3800X may have a slight edge due to its higher thread count. Ultimately, it's essential to consider your specific needs and budget when making a decision.

That makes sense, @Matt3124. I appreciate everyone's input on this. Based on my needs and budget, I think I'll go with the Intel Core i7-11700K since it suits my requirements better. Thanks again for the advice!
