Core i7-11700 Gaming Suitability?

Started by tellerjunge on June 17, 2024

I'm considering purchasing the Core i7-11700 for gaming purposes and need some advice. Has anyone used this CPU for gaming? Are there any drawbacks I should be aware of?

Another point to consider is DDR4 support with a max stock speed of 3200 MHz. This can enhance your gaming experience and provide good performance. Also, check out this TechReviewer article Is the Core i7-11700 CPU Good for Gaming? for more in-depth analysis on its suitability for gaming.

The Core i7-11700 is a good choice for gaming, especially with its 8 cores and a max turbo frequency of 4.90 GHz. You'll definitely have no problem running most games at high settings.

@tellerjunge I've been using the Core i7-11700 for a while now, and it performs great in games. It's important to note that it doesn't support overclocking, which might be a downside if you're looking for maximum performance. The L3 cache capacity is also mediocre at 16 MB.

That's true, the lack of overclocking support could be a bummer. But if you don't mind that and are okay with a CPU cooler that can handle high temperatures, I think it's still a solid option for gaming. Plus, the PCIe 4.0 support is a big plus.

Solution

@MileHiMorrow Thanks for the link! I'll definitely take a look at it. The DDR4 support sounds promising. How's the overall cooling solution for this CPU? Do you need something specific to handle the heat?

The Core i7-11700 does produce some heat due to its high turbo frequency, so having a good quality cooler is essential. I use an AIO liquid cooler and it works great.

I agree with @smartmilk. A high-end air cooler or an AIO liquid cooler will be needed for optimal performance. Don't forget that the 4.90 GHz single-core turbo frequency can generate quite a bit of heat.

@andrewmcdonough Thanks for the advice! I'll make sure to invest in a good cooler. As for the DDR4, is it recommended to go for faster memory modules for better performance?

While faster memory modules like DDR5 are available, they can be quite expensive. The Core i7-11700 already supports DDR4 with a max stock speed of 3200 MHz, which should offer good gaming performance.

I've used DDR4-3600 modules and the performance improvement was noticeable, especially in memory-intensive games like The Witcher 3 or Red Dead Redemption 2. However, it's ultimately up to your budget and preferences.

@andrewmcdonough That's good to know. I'll probably start with DDR4-3200 for now and upgrade later if needed. Thanks everyone for the input!

@tellerjunge You're welcome! Just remember that the Core i7-11700 is a great CPU for gaming, but it has its limitations. Good luck with your decision, and happy gaming!
