Better Overclocking Potential: AMD Ryzen 7 5800 vs. Intel Core i7-12700?

Started by jimboy245 on May 09, 2024

I've been researching CPUs for my next build and I'm trying to decide between the AMD Ryzen 7 5800 and Intel Core i7-12700. Has anyone here had experience with either of these processors? Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi @jimboy245, I have used both the AMD Ryzen 7 5800 and Intel Core i7-12700 in my system, so I can provide some insights. In terms of overclocking potential, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800 seems to perform better compared to the Intel Core i7-12700 according to TechReviewer AMD Ryzen 7 5800 vs. Intel Core i7-12700. The Ryzen 7 5800 has a higher single-core max boost frequency and it also supports DDR4 memory, which is something to consider if you're already planning on upgrading your RAM.

Thanks for sharing, @unvanquish3d! I've been leaning towards the Intel Core i7-12700 because of its better support for DDR5 and higher P-core max boost frequency. However, after reading your response, I might reconsider and give the Ryzen 7 5800 a try!

That's really helpful, @tokyobob. Thanks for sharing your experience, @unvanquish3d. So, if I go with the Ryzen 7 5800, would you recommend any tips or tricks to maximize its overclocking potential?

Hey there, @jimboy245! I've been using a Ryzen 7 5800 for a while now and I can say that it's an excellent processor. To get the most out of it, make sure your cooling is top-notch, as overclocking generates a lot of heat. Also, try to find a good balance between stability and performance when pushing the clock speeds.

Thanks for the advice, @deeblowace! So, if I'm looking for better overall gaming performance, would you suggest going with either the Ryzen 7 5800 or the Intel Core i7-12700? I'm mostly going to be playing FPS games and some AAA titles.

In terms of gaming performance, both the AMD Ryzen 7 5800 and Intel Core i7-12700 are excellent choices. However, if you're looking for better overclocking potential and don't mind upgrading your RAM to DDR4, I'd go with the Ryzen 7 5800. It has a higher single-core max boost frequency which can make a huge difference in gaming, especially in fast-paced matches like Apex Legends.

Yeah, that's true @unvanquish3d. But one thing to keep in mind is that the Intel Core i7-12700 supports PCIe 5.0 while the Ryzen 7 5800 only has PCIe 4.0. This can make a difference when using the fastest SSDs and graphics cards.

Good point, @tokyobob. Thanks for all the input! I think I'll do more research on these two CPUs and also consider my budget and other components before making a final decision. I really appreciate everyone's advice!

You're welcome, @jimboy245! Good luck with your decision-making process. Remember to check out TechReviewer AMD Ryzen 7 5800 vs. Intel Core i7-12700 for more detailed comparisons between the Ryzen 7 5800 and Core i7-12700 if you need further insights!
