I've been trying to decide between the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 and the Intel Core i9-12900KS for my new build, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer on which one is better for performance. Does anyone have experience with both or have any suggestions?
AMD Ryzen 9 7900 vs. Intel Core i9-12900KS Performance?
Started by Pixelcaillou on May 25, 2024
Both CPUs offer great performance overall, but the Ryzen 9 7900 seems to have a slight edge due to its 12 cores, 64 MB L3 cache, and higher single-core max boost frequency. The Core i9-12900KS has more cores and a larger L3 cache, but the Ryzen 9 7900's DDR5 support with a max stock speed of 5200 MHz and PCIe 5.0 compatibility might give it an advantage in certain use cases.
I've read a detailed comparison on TechReviewer AMD Ryzen 9 7900 vs. Intel Core i9-12900KS that covers these CPUs in depth. You should check it out to get more insight into their performance.
@andrewmcdonough Thanks for sharing the link! I'll definitely take some time to go through the article and see if it helps me make my decision. Just out of curiosity, does anyone have personal experience with either one of these CPUs?
I've used both CPUs in my builds, and I must say that the Ryzen 9 7900 performed exceptionally well in gaming and general app usage. The higher single-core max boost frequency really made a difference in some games. However, the Core i9-12900KS has its own advantages, such as better color accuracy when playing visually rich games on an LG monitor.
@egraider That's helpful to know! I'm also looking for a good CPU cooler. Any recommendations based on your experience with either of these CPUs?
Both the Ryzen 9 7900 and Core i9-12900KS can handle high-performance CPU coolers, but you'll want one that offers excellent heat dissipation to maintain those boost frequencies. I've had great success with the Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 for AMD CPUs and the Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4 for Intel CPUs.
@lexcimus I'll look into those coolers. Now, if I were to go with the Ryzen 9 7900, would I be sacrificing any other significant feature by not choosing the Core i9-12900KS?
If you prioritize gaming performance and want a CPU that can handle fast-paced games with ease, the Ryzen 9 7900 is an excellent choice. The higher single-core max boost frequency can make a noticeable difference in those types of games. However, if color accuracy and better GPU utilization are more important to you, then the Core i9-12900KS might be the better option.
@andrewmcdonough Good point! I mostly play fast-paced multiplayer games like Apex Legends and Overwatch, so it seems like the Ryzen 9 7900 would be a better fit for my needs. Thanks for all the input, everyone!
You're welcome, @Pixelcaillou! Just remember to consider your budget, cooling solution, and other components when making your final decision. Good luck with your build!
Best of luck with your new system, @Pixelcaillou! If you have any questions or need advice in the future, don't hesitate to ask.
I appreciate all the help and advice. Now it's time to start building my dream PC!
