AMD Ryzen 9 7900 vs. Intel Core i9-10900F for Programming?

Started by CamDosen on June 17, 2024

I'm currently looking to upgrade my CPU for programming purposes and am stuck between the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 and the Intel Core i9-10900F. Has anyone here experience with these two? Any recommendations would be great!

@MrsDempsey, thanks for sharing your experience! I actually just read an interesting TechReviewer article comparing these two CPUs. You can check it out here: AMD Ryzen 9 7900 vs. Intel Core i9-10900F. The author did a thorough job of explaining the differences between them.

Hi @CamDosen, I've been using the Ryzen 9 7900 for a few months now and it's been excellent! The multiple cores really help with multi-threaded programming tasks. Plus, the higher base frequency and boost speed are great for single-threaded tasks as well.

Solution

@WarlikePenguin That's really helpful! Thanks for the link to the TechReviewer article. From what you've both mentioned, it seems that the Ryzen 9 7900 might be a better choice for programming. But I'm also curious about the Intel Core i9-10900F's performance.

Hi @CamDosen, both of these CPUs are excellent choices and will support your programming needs well! However, if you're working on projects that require heavy multi-threading or need more cores, the Ryzen 9 7900 seems to be the better option. But if you mostly work with single-threaded tasks or have a smaller budget, the Intel Core i9-10900F is also a solid choice.

Thanks for the input, @sumoliang! So it looks like the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 has more cores and a higher base frequency which could benefit my programming needs. I'll probably lean towards that one then. But before making the purchase, I want to make sure there aren't any other factors I should consider.

@CamDosen, another factor to consider is the support for DDR5 with a max stock speed of 5200 MHz in Ryzen 9 7900 which could potentially provide faster data transfer rates and improved overall performance. The Intel Core i9-10900F supports only DDR4 with a max stock speed of 2933 MHz.

That's good to know, @MrsDempsey! So the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 has better memory support as well. It seems like it might be the better choice for my programming needs and preferences. Thanks everyone for your insights!

@CamDosen, you're welcome! Remember that both CPUs are great choices and it really comes down to personal preference and your specific project requirements. Good luck with your decision!
