AMD Ryzen 9 7900 vs. Intel Core i5-13600 for Gaming?

Started by Sneedlethebeetle on June 18, 2024

I'm looking to build a new gaming PC and am trying to decide between the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 and the Intel Core i5-13600 for my CPU. I know both are great options, but can anyone share their experiences or opinions on which one is better for gaming? Also, does anyone have any insight into how these CPUs handle overclocking?

I have used both of these processors and I'd recommend the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 vs. Intel Core i5-13600 article from TechReviewer for a detailed comparison. In my experience, the Ryzen 9 7900 seemed to handle gaming better due to its higher core count and boost frequency. However, the Intel Core i5-13600 isn't bad either, especially if you're on a budget or have limited desk space.

Hi @Sneedlethebeetle, both of those CPUs should give you a good gaming experience. However, the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 has more cores and higher single-core max boost frequency, which can make a big difference in gaming performance, especially for fast-paced games.

Solution

Thanks for your input @ethinker and @gluczkowski2. I've been reading up on both CPUs and it seems like the Ryzen 9 7900 has better overclocking support. Does anyone have any personal experiences with overclocking these CPUs?

I used to have a Ryzen 9 7900 and I was able to push it pretty hard without any issues. It definitely has good potential for overclocking. On the other hand, the Core i5-13600 doesn't officially support overclocking, which might be a deal-breaker for some people.

That's interesting to know @Brushybill1. So, if I were to go with the Ryzen 9 7900, would I need a high-end cooler or could I get away with something less expensive?

The 7900 does generate more heat due to its higher boost frequency, so you might need a better cooler for optimal performance. However, it's still possible to find good coolers within various budget ranges.

Another thing to consider is DDR support. Both CPUs have excellent support for DDR5 memory, but the Ryzen 9 7900 can handle higher stock speeds. This could make a difference in certain games or applications that require more memory bandwidth.

Great points, everyone. So, it seems like the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 might be the better choice for gaming due to its higher core count, overclocking potential, and DDR5 support. However, I still have concerns about the cooling requirements. Any advice on finding a good balance between performance and affordability when it comes to cooling?

It's all about finding the right balance for your specific needs and budget. Some people prefer to spend more upfront on better cooling, while others are willing to compromise a bit for savings. In my experience, the added cost of a high-end cooler is often worth it for the performance gains.

I agree with @ethinker. Spending a little extra on cooling can save you from potential issues down the line. Plus, good cooling can also help extend the life of your CPU. It's a worthwhile investment in the long run.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I think I'll go with the Ryzen 9 7900 and invest in a decent cooler. The AMD Ryzen 9 7900 vs. Intel Core i5-13600 article you mentioned earlier really helped me make my decision.
