AMD Ryzen 9 5950X vs. AMD Ryzen 5 3600 for Gaming?

Started by koreancoffee on July 10, 2024

I've been looking into getting a new gaming PC and came across the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and the AMD Ryzen 5 3600. Any advice on which one to go for? Just need some real user experience.

Hey @satyavayu, glad to hear your 3600 is working well for you! I've personally used both the Ryzen 9 5950X and the 3600, and each has its own advantages. You can check out a detailed comparison in this TechReviewer article AMD Ryzen 9 5950X vs. AMD Ryzen 5 3600.

Well, I recently upgraded my rig with the 3600 and have been pretty happy with it so far. It runs most of my games at max settings without any issues!

Solution

Thanks for sharing, @bojustbo. That's helpful. So, which one would you recommend for gaming?

I'd agree with @bojustbo that both are great CPUs, but if you're looking to future-proof your rig and have the budget for it, the 5950X might be the way to go. The extra cores can really make a difference in certain titles.

Interesting point, @FuzzySets. I'm just wondering though, doesn't that mean the 3600 would bottleneck my GPU?

Well, @koreancoffee, it's possible but not very likely if you have a decent GPU. Most modern games don't benefit from more than 6-8 cores. However, having extra CPU cores can improve performance in games that utilize them heavily.

That makes sense. I guess if I was building my PC for a specific game or doing lots of content creation, the 5950X might be worth it. But since I'm mostly just gaming, the 3600 has been sufficient for me.

Good to know, @satyavayu. Thanks for all the input!
