I've been looking into getting a new CPU and I'm having trouble deciding between the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X and the Intel Core i9-12900F. Has anyone had any experience with these or could point me in the direction of some good resources?

Hey all, great discussion going on here! I've been reading up on these CPUs in some TechReviewer articles AMD Ryzen 9 5900X vs. Intel Core i9-12900F, and it seems like the 5900X excels in applications that don't heavily rely on single-threaded tasks, while the i9-12900F performs better in games due to its higher turbo boost frequency. This makes sense to me because I'm more into gaming than productivity tasks.

Hi @beefman0823, I've been using the Ryzen 9 5900X for a couple months now, and it's been great! For most tasks, I haven't noticed any performance issues. You can find more about my experience at AMD Ryzen 9 5900X vs. Intel Core i9-12900F. As for the Intel Core i9-12900F, I've heard good things from friends who use it in their workstations.

Hey guys, just wanted to chime in here with my two cents. I've been using the i9-12900F and have been pretty impressed with its performance, especially when it comes to gaming. I haven't tried the 5900X though, so I can't really compare them directly.

Interesting! @SoccerStar, what games are you playing that show off the i9-12900F's strength? I'm curious which ones benefit most from a high core count like this one has.

Solution

Oh, that's really helpful @andysali13. So it sounds like if I primarily game, the i9-12900F might be the way to go? But what about overclocking capabilities and memory support?

Yeah, I think you're right @beefman0823. Also, regarding your question, the 5900X does support DDR4 memory up to 3200 MHz while the i9-12900F supports DDR5 memory up to 4800 MHz. As for overclocking, the 5900X is more capable than the i9-12900F in that department.

Yeah, I've never tried overclocking my i9-12900F, but from what I've read it seems like the potential is there, just not as accessible as on the AMD CPU. Memory support-wise, I can definitely say that the higher DDR5 speed makes a noticeable difference in gaming performance for me.

Thanks for the input, guys! So, if I'm looking at productivity tasks and multitasking, would the 5900X be a better choice? And does anyone have any experience with the L3 cache or PCIe support on these CPUs?

For productivity tasks and multitasking, you might want to look into the i9-12900F's 16 cores and its Efficiency cores which could give it an edge in those areas. As for L3 cache, both have impressive sizes, with the 5900X having 64 MB and the i9-12900F having 30 MB. PCIe support is also similar, with the 5900X supporting PCIe 4.0 and the i9-12900F supporting PCIe 5.0.

Alright, that's really helpful advice everyone. I think I'm leaning more towards the i9-12900F now, but I'll do some more research on my own too. Thanks for all the insights!

No problem @beefman0823, happy to help! And remember to consider your budget and other factors like cooling solutions as well when making your final decision.

Good luck with your search, @beefman0823! I'm sure you'll end up with a great CPU for your needs.
