AMD Ryzen 9 5900X vs Intel Core i7-12700K: Best for Gaming?

Started by rakeshgupta1 on July 11, 2024

I've been looking into new CPUs for my gaming setup, and I'm torn between the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X and the Intel Core i7-12700K. Has anyone here tried either of these? Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi @rakeshgupta1! I've used both the Ryzen 9 5900X and Core i7-12700K, and I must say that they are both great choices for gaming. The key differences lie in their core counts, frequencies, and cache capacities. Have you checked out this TechReviewer article? Thanks for the recommendation, @Seedsofbroccoli! I've read through the article and it's really helpful. One thing that stood out to me is the single-core max boost frequency. The 5900X has a 4.8 GHz frequency while the i7-12700K boasts a 5.00 GHz frequency. That's quite a difference!

Yeah, @rakeshgupta1, I noticed that too! I've been using the Core i7-12700K for a few months now, and I can tell you that it performs exceptionally well in games. The higher single-core max boost frequency definitely makes a noticeable difference, especially in demanding titles.

That's true, @livewithrichard. However, the Ryzen 9 5900X also has its merits. It has a larger L3 cache (64 MB) compared to the Core i7-12700K's 25 MB, which can be beneficial for certain applications and games that utilize multiple cores.

I've been researching these CPUs as well, and it seems that both of them offer excellent gaming performance with high-performance CPU coolers. But ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and the specific needs of your system. If you're looking for a higher single-core max boost frequency, the Core i7-12700K might be the way to go. But if you need more cache capacity, the Ryzen 9 5900X could be a better fit.

Good points, @Camaro70. I think I'll try both in a store and see which one feels right for my setup. Thanks for all your input!

Sounds like a plan, @rakeshgupta1! Let us know how it goes if you have any questions later on.
