AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs. Intel Core i5-12400 Overclocking?

Started by nlhaines on May 19, 2024

I've been researching CPUs for a new build and came across the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Intel Core i5-12400. Has anyone had any experience overclocking either of these? I'm wondering if it's worth considering one over the other.

@nlhaines, regarding overclocking capabilities, TechReviewer has a comprehensive comparison of the 5800X3D and the i5-12400 here AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs. Intel Core i5-12400. It might be helpful to check that out before making your decision. You'll find information on core types, frequencies, cache capacities, PCIe support, and more.

@nlhaines, both the 5800X3D and the i5-12400 lack support for overclocking, so you won't be able to push them beyond their stock speeds. That being said, they're still great CPUs with excellent performance overall.

@nlhaines, you should also consider the other specifications like base frequency, L3 cache size, and DDR support when choosing a CPU. I've been using an i5-12400 for a while now and it's served me well in general app usage and light gaming.

Solution

@PicardToBridge, thank you for sharing the link! I've read through it and it's definitely given me a better understanding of the differences between the two CPUs. It seems like the i5-12400 has an edge in terms of DDR support and PCIe, while the 5800X3D has a bigger L3 cache size.

@nlhaines, based on your research, which CPU are you leaning towards? I'm curious if the lack of overclocking capabilities is a deal-breaker for you.

@nlhaines, I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of overclocking. Both CPUs have great performance overall and will serve you well in most scenarios. The 5800X3D has that impressive L3 cache size, while the i5-12400 has better DDR support and PCIe capabilities. It ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences.

@OlliverClosoff and @lunapopdrop, I appreciate your input! After reading through this forum thread, I think I'll go with the i5-12400 for my build. The better DDR support and PCIe capabilities seem like a worthwhile trade-off, especially considering that I won't be able to overclock either CPU anyway.

@nlhaines, glad you found your answer! The i5-12400 will serve you well, and remember to keep an eye out for any discounts or deals when purchasing. Good luck with your new build!
