I'm considering buying a new CPU and need some advice on whether to go for the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D or the 3700X for 4K video rendering. Can anyone share their experiences with these CPUs?

Thanks @abbylanebeetle for sharing your experience. I found this TechReviewer article about these CPUs that provides a lot of useful information: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs. AMD Ryzen 7 3700X. Based on the article, the 5800X3D seems to have an edge in most aspects like core count and cache capacity, but the 3700X supports overclocking.

Hi @rljohns2017, both the Ryzen 7 5800X3D and the 3700X are great options, but they do have some differences. For example, the 5800X3D has eight cores, a base frequency of 3.4 GHz, a single-core boost frequency of 4.5 GHz, and a 96 MB L3 cache, while the 3700X has eight cores, a base frequency of 3.6 GHz, a single-core boost frequency of 4.4 GHz, and a 32 MB L3 cache. Additionally, the 5800X3D doesn't support overclocking, but it does have PCIe 4.0 support which can be helpful when using the fastest SSDs and graphics cards.

I've been using the Ryzen 7 3700X for some time now, and it works well for 4K video rendering. The higher base frequency might give you an edge over the 5800X3D in certain tasks. However, both of them have great performance overall. It really depends on your budget and what other components you're using.

Solution

That's right, @rljohns2017. The choice between these two CPUs depends on your specific needs. If you're looking for better overall performance, especially with tasks that can take advantage of a higher number of cores and larger cache, then the 5800X3D might be the way to go. On the other hand, if you plan to overclock or have a smaller budget, the 3700X could be more suitable.

I've been using the Ryzen 7 5800X3D for about two months now, and I must say it's been excellent for 4K video rendering. The higher single-core boost frequency really makes a difference when exporting videos in Adobe Premiere Pro. Also, the lack of overclocking support might not be an issue if you have a good cooler.

Thanks everyone for your insights. Based on this discussion and the TechReviewer article AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs. AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, I think I'm leaning towards the 5800X3D. However, I'll keep the 3700X in mind if my budget changes or if I need to overclock.
