AMD Ryzen 7 5800X vs. 3800XT in Multitasking?

Started by koreancoffee on May 26, 2024

I've been looking into the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X and 3800XT for my new build, but I'm mainly concerned with multitasking performance. Can anyone shed some light on which one is better for this purpose?

For multitasking, both the 5800X and 3800XT have similar capabilities due to their identical core counts and frequencies. However, the main differences are their base frequencies and support for DDR4 with a max stock speed of 3200 MHz. I would recommend reading this TechReviewer article AMD Ryzen 7 5800X vs. AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT to get a better understanding of the performance differences between these two CPUs.

Thanks for sharing that, @satyavayu. I'm more inclined towards the 5800X now after reading your response. But how does DDR4 with max stock speed of 3200 MHz impact multitasking performance?

@bojustbo The max stock speed of DDR4 doesn't have a significant impact on multitasking performance, as modern operating systems and applications are optimized for lower memory speeds. However, having more RAM can help improve overall system performance when running multiple applications simultaneously.

That's interesting. So, in terms of multitasking, should I be focusing more on the base frequency or the max boost frequency?

@koreancoffee For multitasking, you'll want to focus on both the base frequency and the max boost frequency. Higher frequencies will allow your CPU to handle multiple tasks more efficiently. In this case, the 5800X has a lower base frequency but a higher single-core boost frequency compared to the 3800XT.

Thank you, @satyavayu. So it's basically about balancing both factors for better multitasking performance?

@bojustbo Exactly. It's all about finding the right balance between the two frequencies and the DDR4 speed that works best for your specific use case. The TechReviewer article I mentioned earlier can provide you with a more detailed comparison of these CPUs, including their overclocking potential and other factors to consider.

@FuzzySets Thanks for the information! I'll definitely check out the TechReviewer article you recommended. By the way, does anyone have any personal experiences using either of these processors in a multitasking-heavy environment?

I've used the 5800X in my PC build, and it performs exceptionally well when it comes to multitasking. I run multiple applications, including video editing software, web browsers, and gaming, simultaneously without any issues.

I also have experience with the 3800XT, and I find that it handles multitasking quite well too. The performance is more than adequate for my needs, especially when considering the cost difference between the two processors.

@satyavayu @bojustbo Thanks for sharing your experiences! It's always helpful to get personal insights on hardware performance. I guess it ultimately comes down to individual preferences and budget constraints. Good luck with your build!

I appreciate the advice and insights. I'll make my decision based on the information provided and my own research. Have a great day!
