AMD Ryzen 7 3800X vs. Intel Core i5-10600K for Video Editing?

Started by Heliotile on May 09, 2024

I'm looking to buy a new CPU for video editing, and I'm trying to decide between the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X and Intel Core i5-10600K. Can anyone give me some advice on which one would be better for this purpose?

Thanks for all the input, everyone. I think I'll take a closer look at the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X vs. Intel Core i5-10600K that @apesfromspace13 mentioned and see if the Ryzen 7 3800X is the better fit for my needs. The extra cores and PCIe support could make a difference in the long run.

Both CPUs are great for general computing tasks, but when it comes to video editing, the Ryzen 7 3800X has a slight edge over the i5-10600K due to its higher core count and better L3 cache capacity. Plus, the AMD CPU supports PCIe 4.0, which is a big plus for faster data transfer rates.

I've read a detailed comparison on TechReviewer that you might find helpful. They compared the Ryzen 7 3800X with the Intel Core i5-10600K in terms of core types, core counts, frequencies, cache capacities, and other performance-related aspects. The article is AMD Ryzen 7 3800X vs. Intel Core i5-10600K.

Thanks for sharing that, @apesfromspace13. I'll definitely check it out. The thing is, I don't have a lot of desk space, so the smaller size of the i5-10600K might be an issue. Is there any way to make up for this limitation?

The size difference shouldn't be too much of a concern when it comes to video editing performance. However, you can always mount the CPU cooler vertically if you're running low on desk space. That way, you won't need as much horizontal room.

I've used both CPUs for video editing, and while they both do a good job, I found that the Ryzen 7 3800X's higher core count helped with rendering large video files. The i5-10600K still performs well, but it struggled slightly when I tried to edit 4K video.

That's interesting. @Knowledge1337 How much of a difference did you notice in terms of performance between the two CPUs?

It wasn't night and day, but the Ryzen 7 3800X seemed to handle 4K video editing slightly better than the i5-10600K. I think it really depends on the specific tasks you're doing. If you're primarily editing 1080p videos, either CPU would probably do fine.

@Knowledge1337 is right in saying that it depends on your specific needs. If you're mostly working with 1080p video, the i5-10600K should be more than adequate. However, if you plan to work with higher resolutions or larger files in the future, then the Ryzen 7 3800X might be worth considering.

Solution

Good call, @Heliotile. I hope you find the right CPU for your video editing needs. Just remember that it's important to have a good cooler as well, since both CPUs can get quite warm during intensive tasks.

Absolutely, @massiveart. A quality cooler is crucial to prevent overheating and maintain stability. Good luck with your decision, @Heliotile!
