AMD Ryzen 7 3700X vs Intel Core i5-12400?

Started by TimmerFromDeep on July 10, 2024

I've been considering getting a new CPU and was wondering if anyone has experience with the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i5-12400? I'm specifically looking for opinions on performance, gaming, and general app usage. Any advice would be helpful!

That's interesting! I've been reading up on these two CPUs in this TechReviewer article AMD Ryzen 7 3700X vs. Intel Core i5-12400. It seems like the Ryzen 7 3700X has better overclocking support and higher core count which might be beneficial for general applications, gaming, and professional tools. What are your thoughts?

Hey @TimmerFromDeep, both CPUs are great choices! I've been using the Ryzen 7 3700X for a while now and it's fantastic for gaming and multitasking. As for the Intel Core i5-12400, it's a solid choice too, especially if you're on a budget. But if you can afford it, I'd go with the 3700X.

Solution

I'm a big fan of the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X. I've been using it for quite some time now and it's amazing for gaming and video editing. The 12400 is also good, but if you want to future-proof your system, the 3700X is the way to go.

Thanks for the input everyone! So, based on what you've said, I'm leaning more towards getting the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X. But I have a question for @jonahcarlson: How does the DDR4 support on the 3700X compare to the DDR5 support on the 12400?

The 3700X supports DDR4 up to 3200 MHz, which is still plenty fast for most use cases. However, the 12400 has DDR5 support up to 4800 MHz, so it does have an advantage in that regard.

I've also been looking at PCIe support and it seems like the 3700X has PCIe 4.0 while the 12400 has PCIe 5.0. Does anyone know if this makes a significant difference in performance?

In general, PCIe 5.0 does offer slightly better performance than PCIe 4.0, but the real-world impact might not be as noticeable unless you're using high-end SSDs and GPUs. So it's definitely something to consider, but don't let it be the deciding factor.

Great points! One more question for @yogomushi: How does the L3 cache size on the 3700X compare to the 12400?

The Ryzen 7 3700X has a 32 MB L3 cache, while the Core i5-12400 has an 18 MB L3 cache. In general, having a larger L3 cache can improve performance by allowing more data to be stored for quicker access.

That's true! And when it comes to overclocking support, the 3700X also has a better reputation than the 12400. So in conclusion, I'd say the Ryzen 7 3700X is a better choice overall if you're looking for performance and future-proofing your system.

Your insights have been really helpful. I think I'll go with the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X based on what you've said. I appreciate your help!
