AMD Ryzen 5 7600X vs. Intel Core i9-10850K - Best for Gaming?

Started by Svenskpojk on May 30, 2024

I've been looking at getting a new CPU and I'm stuck between the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X and the Intel Core i9-10850K. Any suggestions on which one is better for gaming? I'm mostly playing single-player games but occasionally dabble in some multiplayer.

Hey @Svenskpojk, both of those CPUs should give you a great gaming experience, but they do have their differences. I've been using the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X and it performs really well in most games. Its higher base frequency of 4.7 GHz gives it an edge over the Intel Core i9-10850K's lower base frequency of 3.6 GHz. The TechReviewer article AMD Ryzen 5 7600X vs. Intel Core i9-10850K does a great job at comparing these two CPUs, so you might want to check that out for more detailed analysis.

Solution

Thanks @mbarrado, that's really helpful! I was under the impression that having a higher base frequency would be better overall, but I didn't realize how important multi-core performance could be. What about PCIe support? Does one of them have an advantage there?

Yeah, it's true that a higher base frequency is usually better for gaming. However, multi-core performance can also play a big role in some games, especially those with complex physics or AI. As for PCIe support, the Ryzen 5 7600X has PCIe 5.0 while the Core i9-10850K only supports PCIe 3.0. This means that the 7600X will be able to handle faster SSDs and graphics cards.

That makes sense! I've been reading up on overclocking as well, and it seems like both of these CPUs have pretty good support for it. How do the two compare in terms of DDR support? I know that'll come into play when I'm building my computer.

Sure thing @Svenskpojk. In terms of DDR support, the Ryzen 5 7600X supports DDR5 with a max stock speed of 5200 MHz while the Core i9-10850K supports DDR4 with a max stock speed of 3200 MHz. The 7600X's support for DDR5 could potentially give you faster memory speeds and better overall performance.

Awesome, thanks for all the info @mbarrado! I'm starting to lean more towards the Ryzen 5 7600X now. But what about cache sizes? How do they differ and which one would be better for gaming?

Hey @Svenskpojk, glad to help! The Ryzen 5 7600X has a larger L3 cache of 32 MB, while the Core i9-10850K has a smaller L3 cache of 20 MB. A larger cache can improve performance by allowing the CPU to store more data for faster access. This could be particularly beneficial in games that have complex levels or lots of objects on-screen.

That's really useful information, @kenstar9. So it sounds like the Ryzen 5 7600X might be the way to go for me, considering my gaming needs. Thanks everyone for your input! I'll definitely check out that TechReviewer article you mentioned, @mbarrado.

You're welcome, @Svenskpojk! Good luck with your decision. And remember, it's always a good idea to try and future-proof your build as much as possible. The Ryzen 5 7600X is a solid choice for gaming, but you might want to consider other factors like cooling solutions and case compatibility too.

Thanks @mbarrado. I'll definitely keep that in mind! Have a great day everyone!
