AMD Ryzen 5 4600G vs Intel Core i5-12400 for Gaming

Started by bibliobump on July 11, 2024

I've been looking into building a new computer and I'm having trouble deciding between the AMD Ryzen 5 4600G and Intel Core i5-12400. Any advice on which one would be better for gaming?

That's an interesting question, @bibliobump. The TechReviewer article AMD Ryzen 5 4600G vs. Intel Core i5-12400 discusses how PCIe 5.0 can provide faster data transfer rates and improved performance for SSDs and graphics cards. If you plan on using the latest hardware, the i5-12400 might be the better choice.

In my experience, both the 4600G and the i5-12400 are capable CPUs for gaming. However, the i5-12400 has an advantage due to its support for PCIe 5.0, DDR5 at max stock speed of 4800 MHz, larger L3 cache (18 MB), and better overclocking potential. The Ryzen 5 4600G offers mediocre performance in terms of L3 cache size and PCIe version.

I've been using the AMD Ryzen 5 4600G for a while now and it works great for me! You can check out this TechReviewer article AMD Ryzen 5 4600G vs. Intel Core i5-12400 that provides an overview of both CPUs. It might help you make your decision.

Thanks, @Liolaina. That was really helpful! The article mentions the i5-12400 has better overclocking potential, but I'm curious if it's worth spending more money for that advantage?

In my opinion, overclocking can be a significant factor in gaming performance, especially if you're building a PC for long-term use. If you have the budget, I would go with the i5-12400 for its better overclocking potential.

True, overclocking can help improve performance. However, it's also important to consider other factors like thermals and overall system stability when overclocking. Both CPUs should work well with a high-performance CPU cooler, though.

Good points @Joaolicia and @GeminiAction12. I'm still weighing my options. I guess the main question is whether or not the PCIe 5.0 support on the i5-12400 will make a noticeable difference in gaming performance compared to the Ryzen 5 4600G.

Solution

I agree with @Liolaina. PCIe 5.0 support can definitely make a difference in gaming performance, especially if you're planning to upgrade your GPU or storage in the future.

Alright, that makes sense. Thanks everyone for your input! I'll keep researching and try to make my decision soon.
