AMD Ryzen 3 3100 vs. AMD Ryzen 5 3400G - Better for Gaming?

Started by ChemistDude on May 21, 2024

I'm looking for advice on which of these two CPUs would be better for gaming: the AMD Ryzen 3 3100 or the AMD Ryzen 5 3400G? I've been doing some research but haven't found a clear answer. Any experiences with either one?

Hi @ChemistDude, I've been using both of these processors and can give you an idea about them. For gaming, I'd say the Ryzen 5 3400G is better due to its higher single-core max boost frequency and PCIe support. The TechReviewer article AMD Ryzen 3 3100 vs. AMD Ryzen 5 3400G has a detailed comparison that might help you make your decision.

Solution

Thanks for the input @stephenseifert. It's good to know that the Ryzen 5 3400G has an edge in some areas, but I'm also concerned about the price difference between the two. Any thoughts on whether it's worth paying more for the better CPU?

Hey there! I've owned both CPUs and can chime in as well. The Ryzen 3 3100 is a solid option if you're on a budget, but if gaming performance is your priority, the Ryzen 5 3400G offers a noticeable improvement. It's really about what features matter most to you. As for price, it depends on your personal preferences and priorities.

That's helpful advice, @shemsheep. I guess I'll have to weigh my options. But before I make any decision, I'd like to ask @stephenseifert if the Ryzen 5 3400G has better thermals or if it gets too hot during intense gaming sessions?

Hey @ChemistDude, both CPUs should handle gaming sessions without thermal throttling as long as you have a decent cooler. However, I did notice that the Ryzen 5 3400G runs slightly warmer than the 3100, but it's not something that would cause any issues or affect performance.

I've been using the 3100 for about a month now and I must say it has performed well in my gaming setup. The only time I noticed any thermal issues was when I overclocked it, but that was expected. If you're not planning on overclocking, you shouldn't have any problems with thermals.

Thanks for the responses everyone. It seems like the Ryzen 5 3400G might be the better choice overall for gaming. But as @shemsheep said, it's ultimately up to my personal preferences and budget. I'll definitely check out the TechReviewer article that @stephenseifert mentioned to get more insights.

Great! Let me know if you have any other questions or need further clarification. Good luck with your decision!

Will do, thanks @stephenseifert. Take care everyone!
