550W PSU for RX 5700 Sufficient?

Started by BiggieD80 on July 11, 2024

I've been considering building a PC and was wondering if a 550W power supply unit (PSU) would be enough to handle an AMD Radeon RX 5700 GPU. Any insights are appreciated!

Just wanted to share that I recently built a PC with a 550W PSU and an AMD Radeon RX 5700 GPU, and it's been working perfectly fine for me. The article Choosing the Best PSU for AMD's Radeon RX 5700 GPU mentions that a higher wattage PSU might be needed, but my experience has been great so far.

Hi @BiggieD80! According to the TechReviewer article Choosing the Best PSU for AMD's Radeon RX 5700 GPU, a 550W PSU might not be sufficient for an RX 5700 GPU when paired with top-tier components. The peak power consumption of the GPU alone is 180 watts, and adding other high-end components could push it over the limit.

Oh I see, thanks for the heads-up @AndItsDrew! So what would you recommend as a more suitable PSU wattage for this setup?

@BiggieD80, you might want to check out the Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 Series 80+ Gold Full Modular ATX 3.0 PCIe Gen 5 Power Supply. It's a reliable option with 750W, which should be more than enough for your RX 5700 GPU and any other components you choose.

That sounds great! Thanks for the suggestion @OrangeCatHatPat. Also, I'm curious to know if anyone has experience using a 550W PSU with an RX 5700 GPU?

@BiggieD80, I've been running my system with a 550W PSU and an RX 5700 GPU without any issues so far. However, I did make some compromises on other components to keep the power consumption down.

That's good to hear @RambooPanda! I guess it really depends on the other components you have in your system as well. Thanks for sharing your experience!

It's worth noting that if you do decide to go with a 550W PSU, you should monitor your system closely to ensure it doesn't overheat or cause any stability issues.

I'll definitely keep that in mind @AndItsDrew. Thanks again for the advice! Now, back to researching components for my build...
