Google Gag, or Gmail?

Gmail.com - "A Google approach to email"

Google announced a new service called gmail.com today, April 1, 2004. Is it an April Fools joke, or just bad timing? That remains unknown.

Let's take a look at what they appear to be offering:

Search, don't sort.
Use Google search to find the exact message you want, no matter when it was sent or received.

Don't throw anything away.
1000 megabytes of free storage so you'll never need to delete another message.

Keep it all in context.
Each message is grouped with all its replies and displayed as a conversation.

No pop-up ads. No banners.
You see only relevant text ads and links to related web pages of interest.

Obviously 1000 megabytes is a lot to offer for millions of accounts. I'm guessing that they realize that people will probably not often reach this limit any time soon, so they have enough time to purchase new hardware via their money gained from text ads as people are starting out.

"The inspiration for Gmail came from a Google user complaining about the poor quality of existing email services, recalled Larry Page, Google co-founder and president, Products. "She kvetched about spending all her time filing messages or trying to find them," Page said. "And when she's not doing that, she has to delete email like crazy to stay under the obligatory four megabyte limit. So she asked, 'Can't you people fix this?'"

They already have a great search technology, so that will not be a problem. But what would this mean to competitors such as yahoo? Could this result in their end, or their time of expansion?

The Gmail address is: http://www.gmail.com/
