Microsoft Cybernetics
Posted by Kevin on 06/27/04 at 12:02 PM

So, you thought Microsoft had gone far enough by encompassing markets including hardware, operating systems, gaming platforms, and programming languages, and are beginning to incorporate their services into everything from vending machines to cars?

They're at it again! What market are they taking over now? Here is a hint. They have recently patented your skin. Yes, that's right, they got a recent patent on a "Method and apparatus for transmitting power and data using the human body."

Here is the abstract for the previously linked patent document:

"Methods and apparatus for distributing power and data to devices coupled to the human body are described. The human body is used as a conductive medium, e.g., a bus, over which power and/or data is distributed. Power is distributed by coupling a power source to the human body via a first set of electrodes. One or more devise to be powered, e.g., peripheral devices, are also coupled to the human body via additional sets of electrodes. The devices may be, e.g., a speaker, display, watch, keyboard, etc. A pulsed DC signal or AC signal may be used as the power source. By using multiple power supply signals of differing frequencies, different devices can be selectively powered. Digital data and/or other information signals, e.g., audio signals, can be modulated on the power signal using frequency and/or amplitude modulation techniques."

I'm not sure what the exact plans are for this apparatus, but I'm sure it could be used to make a KILLER XBox 3!

What do you think it will be used for? What are your overall thoughts on this technology? Do you think your body will eventually be able to get a virus if you forget to turn on your firewall?

Discuss Microsoft's Skin Patent in the forum!

Do Not Spam List
Posted by Kevin on 06/21/04 at 1:45 PM

We all want a "Do Not Spam" list of some sort to go into effect. But the question is if it could be enforced. The US Congress is now getting involved and suggested the creation of a "Do Not Email Registry" to the Federal Trade Commission, but there is a problem that the FTC sees. This suggested list can not be implemented before a new system, to verify the origins of e-mail, emerges. This makes sense. We do not want to create a huge directory for the spammers to use, containing millions of e-mail addresses. This, in effect, would cause the spam rates to increase!

So what does this mean for you? Expect a total revamp of the e-mail structure soon. Perhaps if we begin using a new method for sending e-mail, those who do not update will not be able to get their messages to the intended end-users. To promote these efforts, the FTC, about a week ago, announced they will be "sponsoring a Fall 2004 Authentication Summit to encourage a thorough analysis of possible authentication systems and their swift deployment."

What's a LAN Party?
Posted by Kevin on 06/18/04 at 1:33 AM

According to a recent TechReviewer.com poll, many of our visitors don't know what a LAN party is! To fill this knowledge gap, our guest writer Jimmy has written a short article briefly discussing the basics of what a LAN party is. If you would like to know, go read over What's a LAN Party? today!

New TR Poll!
Posted by Kevin on 06/16/04 at 11:12 AM

We've finally moved on to a new TechReviewer.com poll question! Our new question is "What size of system case do you prefer?" Make sure to vote using the poll on the right side of this page.

For our last question "What's the best part of a LAN party?" the top choices were "Gaming" and "ODing of Caffeine.' That doesn't surprise me! Amazingly, 26 people did not even know what a LAN party was. Perhaps some day we will have to make an article about what they are, or something similar.
