Return of the FBI Warnings!
Posted by Kevin on 02/19/04 at 6:06 PM

Remember when FBI warnings use to always appear on VHS tapes? It was usually something you would always fast forward through before the movie previews. THEY'RE BACK!

Trade groups representing the U.S. entertainment industry said on thursday that new CDs, DVDs, and video games would begin carrying a "stark warning" about legal penalties for unauthorized copies as part of an effort to combat digital piracy.

The new label will have the FBI seal on it.

The text is said to read:

"The unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. Criminal copyright infringement, including infringement without monetary gain, is investigated by the FBI and is punishable by up to five years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000."

This was announced by the FBI, Motion Picture Association of America (Hollywood Studios), the RIAA, and the video games industry's Entertainment Software Association.

What do you think about this new FBI label? Discuss it in the forum!

XBox Next
Posted by Kevin on 02/17/04 at 1:03 PM

What are the specs of the XBox Next?

The following is a list of specs which has been "leaked" or perhaps unofficially released from Microsoft:

Three IBM-designed 64-bit microprocessors, which means the Xbox Next will have more computing power than most personal computers!

Graphics chip designed by ATI. It is reportedly faster than ATI's upcoming R400 GPU. (Looks like NVidia is losing the battle!)

Flash Memory instead of Hard Drives.

256 - 512 MB of memory

DVD technology of some sort expected to be included. (Either Blu-Ray or successor)

What do you think about the XBox Next? What should be included? What shouldn't be?

Discuss it in the forum!

Photonic Microchips
Posted by Kevin on 02/16/04 at 12:36 PM

Computing at the Speed of Light

Cornell Universit announced, at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Seattle, of having created all of the components for silicon optical computers that use light instead of electrons.

Wires were replaced by beams of light routed on-chip through air by silicon waveguides controlled by electro-optical switches, and off-chip by a "pin hole" lens connecting to normal optical fibers.

"Photonic microchips are now a reality, not just a dream anymore. We have used nanoscale fabrication techniques to make the silicon components for optical routers, repeaters and the optical computer is just around the corner," said Michal Lipson, an assistant professor at Cornell University, in Ithaca, N.Y. "Our technology will also help to make home use of fiber-optic cables practical."

Cyber Alert System
Posted by Kevin on 02/05/04 at 3:58 PM

Did you know that the United States government has created a National Cyber Alert System?

According to us-cert.gov, US-CERT "provides a mechanism that allows citizens, businesses, and other institutions to communicate directly with the United States government regarding cyber security information. US-CERT has created the National Cyber Alert System, which is America's first cohesive national cyber security system for identifying, analyzing, and prioritizing emerging vulnerabilities and threats. The system provides credible and timely information on cyber security issues for both technical and non-technical users."

If you visit the site, you can join a e-mail mailing list, which will allow you to view crucial internet-related information.

If you have pertinent crucial information, then you may also report incidents or vulnerabilities at us-cert.gov.

Useful Grid Computing?
Posted by Kevin on 02/03/04 at 12:32 PM

Grid computing has been useful in the past for services such as SETI@home, but in the near future you could see similar technologies in Adobe Products.

Under a licensing agreement announced on Monday, Adobe will include GridIron's XLR8 software with the next version of After Effects Professional, an Adobe package that lets editors spruce up videos with special effects, animated text and other modifications.

These effects often can require large doses of computing horsepower when applied to frame after frame of video. GridIron's XLR8 software can draw on unused processing power across the network to accomplish that task, GridIron said.
