$250,000 Bounty! |

As a follow up to the recent post regarding the MyDoom Virus, SCO has now place a $250,000 bounty on the head of the MyDoom virus writer!
The MyDoom virus was set out to launch a denial of service attack on SCO's website beginning February 1.
""During the past ten months SCO has been the target of several DDOS attacks," said Darl McBride, president and CEO, The SCO Group, Inc. "This one is different and much more troubling, since it harms not just our company, but also damages the systems and productivity of a large number of other companies and organizations around the world. The perpetrator of this virus is attacking SCO, but hurting many others at the same time. We do not know the origins or reasons for this attack, although we have our suspicions. This is criminal activity and it must be stopped. To this end, SCO is offering a total of $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this crime."
SCO is also working with U.S. law enforcement authorities including the U.S. Secret Service and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to determine the identity of the individual(s) involved. Anyone with this information may contact their local FBI office.

MyDoom/Novarg Virus |

New Virus on the run!
There's a new virus going around known as "MyDoom," although also going under the names of: Novarg, Shimg, and Mimail.R.
Read the microsoft security article here.
According to an article on Slashdot in addition to mass mailing, the virus also distributes itself via the P2P network Kazaa. Apparently it can perform a denial-of-service against www.sco.com.
Check out the Symantec Security Response report here.
According to Symantec "W32.Novarg.A@mm is a mass-mailing worm that arrives as an attachment with the file extension .bat, .cmd, .exe, .pif, .scr, or .zip.
When a computer is infected, the worm will set up a backdoor into the system by opening TCP ports 3127 through 3198, which can potentially allow an attacker to connect to the computer and use it as a proxy to gain access to its network resources."

WinAmp 5 |

It has been out for at least a few weeks now, but I finally got around to installing it today. According to many people, winamp has always been better than Window Media Player. I, did not agree with them, until upgrading to WinAmp 5.
In the past, I have used Media Player 9 because of its very cool media library, searching abilities, and dynamic searches (such as searching for specific genres of music). Well what do you know?! It looks like Nullsoft took these features and shoved them in WinAmp 5!
WinAmp now has a searching ability and it appears to be faster than Media Player's AND searches without requiring you to hit enter. One would think that they would ATLEAST change the name to something besides Media Library, but this is helpful to non-advanced users whom are accustom to using Microsoft's Windows Media Player. You can also easily search for specific genres (or album, year, bitrate, file size, last updated, length, play count, etc.) by right clicking on local media under the Media Library and clicking "Add New View."
So overall, WinAmp 5 now has a awesome new look, and many of the features of Media Player! I just think I might start using it. We will have to see! Now, to start poking around at the other features!!!
Oh, and did you know that you can have the window semi-transparent, but then have it become fully opaque when you hover your mouse over it? How cool!
Grab a copy of WinAmp 5 today!

Got a smoking Dell server? |

Seems Dell sold a large amount of Poweredge servers with defective motherboards causing them to smoke... Dell is contacting buyers of its PowerEdge 1650 servers because of a defect that can cause the systems to overheat, emit smoke, and shut down, the vendor said Wednesday. The motherboards of all PowerEdge 1650 servers sold worldwide between January and early May last year could be defective and should be replaced, Dell spokesperson Bruce Anderson says. "The inductor on the motherboard can overheat and can cause a small amount of smoke to emit," he says. When the overheating occurs, the server shuts down. "There is no safety issue," Anderson says. The inductor is used to control voltage, he says. More @ Neowin

I really hate the RIAA... |

Apparently ISP's are now ignoring the RIAA's subpoenas due to a ruling in court (December) declaring those subpoenas illegal.
After an appeals court ruled that Internet service providers (ISPs) do not have to hand over names of suspected music pirates to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), ISPs are showing no interest in the RIAA's latest effort to enlist them in its fight against music piracy.

Trying to sell West Virginia? |

Apparently someone had the bright idea to try to sell West Virginia on Ebay;bids reached 99 million before Ebay stopped the auction.
By Tuesday evening, with five days to go in the sale of item number 2372779353, "Entire State of West Virginia," bidders had bumped the ante up to just $1 short of $100 million.
"As an eBay consumer myself ... that's a heck of a bargain!" joked Amy Shuler Goodwin, spokeswoman for Gov. Bob Wise, who's projecting a $120 million deficit for fiscal 2005.

Unmanned on the moon |

According to this article President Bush will call on Wednesday for landing an unmanned spacecraft on the moon this decade to lay the groundwork for humans to return to the lunar surface and eventually visit Mars.
It looks like Bush got excited when NASA succeeded in landing the Rover on Mars! He is now proposing to increase NASA's budget by 5 percent a year over the next three years.
"Aides said Bush's plan calls for replacing the aging U.S. space shuttles with a new-generation spacecraft to get Americans back to the moon and to Mars. An unmanned mission to the moon would come later this decade. Humans would return to the moon's surface in the middle of the next decade, establishing a presence there as a stepping stone to an eventual manned mission to Mars."

RIAA squads |

An interesting read:
Music Industry Puts Troops in the Streets
"Though no guns were brandished, the bust from a distance looked like classic LAPD, DEA or FBI work, right down to the black "raid" vests the unit members wore. The fact that their yellow stenciled lettering read "RIAA" instead of something from an official law-enforcement agency was lost on 55-year-old parking-lot attendant Ceasar Borrayo."

Note that NASA's website has already been in high demand, so they have taken
down their video content. Here is a quote from NASA's website:
"By early Tuesday, visitors downloaded nearly
15 terabytes of information from NASA/Mars Websites. To hold 15 terabytes,
it would take a stack of more than 20,000 CDs - without cases - reaching
more than 100 feet high! Keep checking back as traffic gets lighter."
